GP38-2
An Early Atlas Model of a GP38-2
Not much to see here after removing the body from the GP38-2. This is the Atlas insides containing plastic parts and the wires from trucks to motor with a little light that floated in the cab. Upon looking this over I decided the best thing to do was to make this a into a dummy locomotive. The plastic parts and the simple motor could be easy to remove.
But this was not what our member wanted as he really wanted the GP38-2 to be an operating locomotive with DCC. Using the one of the plastic frames as a location for a decoder allowed me, with a little adjustment, to install the NCE decoder.
To make it fit well I decided there was room under the plastic wire holder to remove a bit of plastic to lower and cement it back in place with the decoder on top lower enough to clear the locomotive body.
The GP30B unit had other issues with the gears and an old motor. Because it would only be used with a cab unit, I made it a dummy GP30B Passenger unit. (It contained a steam unit)
